Reallocation of Funding to My Own Backyard (MOBY) Community Association

RECOMMENDATION

GENERAL MANAGER'S COMMENTS

The General Manager of Community Services recommends approval.

COUNCIL POLICY

Approval of a Grant requires 8 affirmative votes.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this report is to recommend to Council the reallocation of funds from the Collingwood Community Policing Centre to My Own Backyard (MOBY) Community Association, to develop a community garden on East 11th and East 12th Avenues, east of Commercial Drive.

BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSION

On June 24th, 2004, Council approved the development of a community amenity on East 11th and East 12th Avenues, east of Commercial Drive for a community garden.

Council also approved a maximum amount of $93,000 for the community garden, to be administered by the Collingwood Community Policing Centre, in partnership with the MOBY Community Group.

At the time, MOBY was not incorporated and, therefore, approached the Collingwood CPC to administer the project funding and legal agreements. The Collingwood CPC had agreed to sponsor the project when there did not seem to be another workable option. Since that time the MOBY Community Association has been granted status as a registered non-profit organization.

FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS

There are no financial implications for the City as the funds have already been approved and allocated for this purpose.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, staff recommend approval of the reallocation of $93,000 to My Own Backyard (MOBY) Community Association to develop a community garden, on East 11th and East 12th Avenues, east of Commercial Drive. This reallocation is a more effective use of resources as it will allow funds to go directly to the organization involved in the design and development of this community amenity from its outset to actuality.
