INFORMATION

PURPOSE

This report is to inform Council that Mr. Larry Beasley, Vancouver's Co-Director of Planning and Director of Current Planning has been awarded the 2003 Award of Excellence by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) as "Advocate for Architecture".

BACKGROUND

This is an unsolicited juried national award conferred upon nomination by Architects, in this case from several cities across the country, and this is the first time this award has been given by the RAIC. The medal was presented in Toronto on May 9, 2003.

The RAIC describes the award as follows. "The Advocate for Architecture award recognizes an individual who has contributed to the elevation of architecture in the public realm by means other than the practice of architecture. The award recognizes a long-term commitment to, and support for, the profession of architecture in Canada".

In the words of the nominators (as quoted from the May 2003 issue of the RAIC Journal of Record, Canadian Architect), "Mr. Beasley has laboured diligently in the past decades to create an environment for great architecture to occur within an urban context...as Co-Director of Planning in Vancouver he has been a tireless advocate for the integration of planning principles and excellence in architecture. The opportunity afforded to the architectural community as a result of his vision and tenacity has resulted in exemplary work which is recognized around the world".

Mr. Beasley has been in civic service in Vancouver for 27 years and is a voting member of the Development Permit Board. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of British Columbia and is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Planning, Design and Realty of Ottawa's National Capital Commission.
