COUNCIL POLICY

There is no applicable City policy.

DISCUSSION

On April 15th, the City of Vancouver was requested by the Vancouver/Whistler 2010 Bid Society to have a representative sit on the Board in developing and managing the bid process for the 2010 Olympics. As one of the guiding principles of the organization, the bid is to be a community driven process. It was felt that a representative from the City of Vancouver would ensure an active relationship between Vancouver and the bid process.

Representatives from the resort municipality of Whistler, the GVRD and the Province of BC have also been invited.

The City Manager’s Office believes that Sheri Plewes, Assistant City Engineer, Water, Sewer and Yards, would be an appropriate candidate. Sheri has been involved in many major City events, including APEC, where she coordinated the Traffic Management Plan, emergency response & utility management. In addition, Sheri was responsible for the special events and film office which included planning for large events such as parades and runs. As well, her role in major developments involved work in providing information to the public through open houses and public meetings.

Sheri is willing to undertake the assignment which will entail one or two meetings per month.

CONCLUSION

City of Vancouver’s input into the bid process for the 2010 Olympics is important in ensuring that the bid is put forward in a way that enhances the experience for the citizens of Vancouver and for the Olympic participants.
