SUBJECT:	Authority to Travel to Portland: June 19-21, 1998 Eight Vancouver City Councillors

RECOMMENDATION

THAT Council authorize Councillors Don Bellamy, Nancy A. Chiavario, Jennifer Clarke, Alan Herbert, Lynne Kennedy, Daniel Lee, Gordon Price and Sam Sullivan to travel to Portland, June 19-21, 1998, in order to attend several tours being arranged for them to see Portland's Light Rail system, housing, upgrade of Portland's City Hall and, also, to attend a forum at Portland City Hall where Councillor Price is a guest speaker, at a cost of $5,288.00 (Cdn).

CITY MANAGER'S COMMENTS

The City Manager RECOMMENDS approval of the foregoing.

COUNCIL POLICY

Council's travel policy, approved July 31, 1992, requires Council approval for travel within North America.

PURPOSE

This report requests approval for the above-mentioned Councillors to travel to Portland in order to attend several tours including Portland's light rail system, housing, upgrade of its City Hall and, also, to attend a forum at City Hall where Councillor Price is a guest speaker.

DISCUSSION

The following are the estimated costs that will be incurred:

Air fare for 8 Councillors	$245.00/each	$1,960.00
Hotel accommodation for 8 Councillors	2 nights @ $133.00 each	$2,128.00
Per Diem for 8 Councillors	3 days @ $50.00 each	$1,200.00
TOTAL (in Cdn funds)		$5,288.00

Funds are available in Council's travel account.
