SUBJECT:Renaming a Portion of Salal Drive as Cranberry Drive.

RECOMMENDATION

A.THAT the north-south portion of Salal Drive running from mid-block to 11th Avenue be renamed as Cranberry Drive and numbered as the 2700-block.

B.THAT the Director of Legal services be instructed to bring forward the appropriate amendments to the Street Name By-Law.

COUNCIL POLICY

Council uses the Street Name By-Law, No. 4954, to name and regulate public roads in the City of Vancouver. The Street Naming Committee is a staff team, chaired by the City Clerk, comprised of the City Surveyor, representatives of the Planning, Legal Services, Permits & Licenses, and Fire & Rescue Services Departments. The Committee is responsible for the management of a consistent, integrated and duplication-free street name system.

PURPOSE

This report seeks Council approval for renaming a portion of Salal Drive as Cranberry Drive.

DISCUSSION

A new public north-south street has been laid out parallel to and west of Arbutus Street between 10th and 11th Avenues. The new street aligns with the existing northward extension of Salal Drive that runs from approximately midway between 11th and 12th Avenues to the south side of 11th Avenue.

It appears clear that the new street and the northward extension of Salal Drive will be perceived at street level as a single entity extending from 10th Avenue to mid-block between 11th and 12th Avenues. The Street Naming Committee proposes renaming the north-south portion of Salal Drive (see attached map), with the revised name to extend to the new street.

In consistency with the nomenclature of trees and bushes commonly used in this area of the City, the Street Naming Committee considers Cranberry Drive to be an appropriate and unambiguous name for the renamed portion of Salal Drive and the new street.

In consistency with the existing grid of street numbers, the portion of Cranberry Drive lying between 10th and 11th Avenues should be numbered as the 2600-block and the portion running south from 11th Avenue numbered as the 2700-block.
