Council uses the Street Name By-Law, No. 4954, to name and regulate public roads in the City of Vancouver. The Street Naming Committee is a staff team, chaired by the City Clerk, comprised of the City Surveyor, representatives of the Planning, Legal Services, Permits & Licenses, and Fire & Rescue Services Departments. The Committee is responsible for the management of a consistent, integrated and duplication-free street name system.
PURPOSE
This report seeks Council approval for renaming Trestle Way to Beach Avenue.
DISCUSSION
Trestle Way, a new public street, lies southwest of Pacific Boulevard and runs generally southeast from Richards Street, crosses Homer Street and extends beyond it.
When the Street Naming Committee first considered this street in mid-1997, the Committee believed that it was intended to extend only from Richards Street to a short distance beyond Homer Street (see attached map). Because its course was similar to that of the old Kitsilano Trestle, the chosen name, Trestle Way, was thought to be an appropriate reference to Vancouver's past.
Subsequent to the naming of the street, however, the Committee has learned that plans exist for its extension to the west, where it will align with the existing Beach Avenue at Granville Street. It is a design principle in False Creek North that new urban areas be integrated with the existing street grid. Since what had been perceived as the stand-alone Trestle Way will, in fact, be an extension of Beach Avenue, the Street Naming Committee believes that it should be named accordingly.
