ADMINISTRATIVE REPORT Date: July 17, 1996 Dept. File No. 5527-3 TO: Vancouver City Council FROM: City Clerk, as Chair of Street Naming Committee SUBJECT: New Street Name in Kitsilano - Salal Drive RECOMMENDATION A. THAT the newly dedicated public road, from Yew Street, with most of its length parallel to and approximately midway between 11th and 12th Avenues, then turning north to meet 11th Avenue west of Arbutus Street, be named Salal Drive . B. THAT the Director of Legal services be instructed to bring forward the appropriate amendments to the Street Name By-Law. CITY MANAGER'S COMMENTS The City Manager RECOMMENDS approval of A and B. COUNCIL POLICY Council uses the Street Name By-Law, No. 4954, to name and regulate public roads in the City of Vancouver. The Street Naming Committee is a staff team comprised of the City Surveyor, representatives of the Permits & Licenses and Legal Services Departments and is chaired by the City Clerk. The Committee is responsible for the management of a consistent, integrated and duplication-free street name system. PURPOSE This report seeks Council approval for the naming of a newly dedicated public road in Kitsilano as part of the Greystone Properties Ltd development, 12th and Arbutus Residential Neighbourhood . -2- DISCUSSION A new, hockey stick-shaped road has been established in the residential portion of the Kitsilano neighbourhood. It begins at Yew Street heading eastwards, approximately midway between 11th and 12th Avenues, and then turning northwards to intersect 11th Avenue west of Arbutus Street(see attached plan). The streets running north and south in the immediately surrounding portion of Kitsilano are strongly characterized by their tree and plant names: Yew, Arbutus, Maple, Larch, Vine. In order to preserve this naming pattern, the Street Names Committee has prepared a list of tree and plant not used elsewhere in the Vancouver area which it offers as suggestions for possible new street names in Kitsilano. Salal is a name appearing on that list. The salal is a plant native to and growing naturally in British Columbia. It is an evergreen, bushy shrub, growing to a little less than a metre in height. In the late spring or early summer it produces pink flowers and later in the year, purple berries. As the road will be used by automobiles, Drive was deemed to be an appropriate and descriptive companion name to Salal . After some discussion of alternatives, Greystone Developers Ltd have expressed themselves in favour of Salal Drive . The Committee, therefore, recommends that the new road be called Salal Drive . * * * * *
