I
REPORT TO COUNCIL
SPECIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON PUBLIC ART
JANUARY 8, 1996
INFORMATION
1. Annual Report
The Public Art Committee (PAC) was established in 1991 to advise
City Council, staff, artists and others on implementa-tion of the
Public Art Program. The Committee has nine members: five members from
the artist community (at least two of whom must be practising
artists), two urban designers (an architect and a landscape
architect), a developer, and a citizen.
Since it reported to Council on January 31, 1995, the Committee
has allocated its time as follows:
1) Advising on major private-sector art processes by
Concord Pacific at False Creek North; by Bayshore
Gardens, ASPAC Developments, and Marathon Realty, all
at Coal Harbour; and by Monterey Developments at 1200
West Georgia.
2) Advising on public art for Library Square, for Public
Works Canada Tower, for 901 West Hastings, and on
Community Public Art Program grants.
3) Advising on the 1995 Public Art Capital Plan
allocations adopted by Council on December 7, 1995.
4) Advising on revisions, developed in conjunction with
Urban Development Institute, for maintain-ing art work
on private development lands; and advising on the
Public Art Reserve.
5) Advising the Planning Department on murals and other
matters proposed for private develop-ments.

2. Highlights
In May, the Committee hosted a series of public informa-tion
meetings about the Program at SFU Downtown. These proved to be a
valuable means of disseminating information, and the Committee will
host a similar series in 1996. In November, Committee member Karen
Henry, together with City Librarian Musa Tryon, went to Ottawa to
select art from the Canada Council Art Bank for Library Square.
Members of the Committee during 1995 are listed in Appendix A.
