1.    Free Parking for Veterans during Remembrance Day Week 2007 (Video Clip)

MOVER: Councillor Louie

SECONDER: Councillor Stevenson

WHEREAS the Federal Government declared 2005 the Year of the Veteran and Canadians celebrated, honoured and remembered the contributions and sacrifice of our veterans throughout the year;

AND WHEREAS the City of Vancouver honours veterans and their service every year through a ceremony at the victory Square Cenotaph and other locations like the Chinatown Cenotaph to mark Remembrance Day;

AND WHEREAS 2007 marks the 62 nd anniversary of the end of the Second World War and many of our armed forces are currently engaged overseas;

AND WHEREAS City Council has previously unanimously supported the provision of free meter parking for Veterans during the week of Remembrance Day;

AND WHEREAS City Council failed to honour our veterans in 2006 with free meter parking;

AND WHEREAS City Council's direction to staff to explore options to provide free metered parking for Vancouver resident Veterans on an ongoing basis for future weeks of Remembrance Day and report back to council for consideration is unlikely to be fulfilled in time for 2007 Remembrance Day;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT the city of Vancouver provide free meter parking from Sunday, November 4, 2007 to Sunday, November 11, 2007 for Veterans with veteran's license plates as a way to acknowledge their sacrifice and service to our community.
