Extension of Cornett Road and New Street Name of Natal Street |
RECOMMENDATION
A. THAT the new public road west of the existing east/west portion of Cornett Road to Bentall Street be named Cornett Road.
B. THAT the existing north/south portion of Cornett Road be renamed Natal Street.
C. THAT the Director of Legal Services be instructed to bring forward the appropriate amendment to the Street Name By-law.

COUNCIL POLICY
Council uses the Street Name By-Law, No. 4054, to name and regulate public roads in the City of Vancouver. The Street Naming Committee, a staff team, is chaired by the City Clerk, and comprised of the Archivist, City Surveyor, representatives of the Planning, Licenses & Inspections, and Fire & Rescue Services Departments. The Committee is responsible for the management of a consistent, integrated and duplication-free street name system.
PURPOSE
This report seeks Council approval for naming an extension of Cornett Road and renaming an existing road Natal Street.
DISCUSSION
The Street Naming Committee was advised of the proposed extension of a road, west of the existing east/west portion of Cornett Road, to Bentall Street (see Appendix A). It was agreed to continue the name Cornett on the proposed west extension.
The Committee noted there was an already existing north/south portion of Cornett Road with several businesses addressed on the street. The Committee also noted it is not normal practice to rename existing streets. However, to avoid confusion in the numbering of addresses, the Committee agreed the north/south portion would require renaming.
A number of streets in the area are named after towns with a mining history, e.g. Slocan, Skeena, Kaslo, Rupert. Therefore, to continue with the mining connection, the Committee proposes renaming the north/south portion Natal Street (see Appendix B).
CONCLUSION
The Street Naming Committee recommends Council approve the name Cornett Road for the proposed extension west of the existing east/west portion of Cornett Road and the name Natal Street for the existing north/south portion of Cornett Road.
