Demolition of vacant City-owned building located at #1 Kingsway
RECOMMENDATION
THAT Council approve the demolition of the vacant building at #1 Kingsway, legally described as Lot D, Block 43, District Lot 200A, Plan 20439 (see map), with the cost of demolition is estimated to be $150,000. The fee should be charged to PEF Demolition account 9300/80090/531240, and recoverable from the budget of future civic projects developed on the site.

The General Manager of Corporate Services RECOMMENDS approval of the foregoing.
COUNCIL POLICY
There is no applicable Council policy.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this report is to seek Council authority to demolish the building at #1 Kingsway.
BACKGROUND
On September 18, 2001 Council approved the report to purchase the property at #1 Kingsway (the former Lawson Oats site), having a legal description of Lot D, Block 43, District Lot 200A, Plan 20439 for the development of a combined community centre/library complex.
CURRENT SITUATION
The building at #1 Kingsway was vacant when the City purchased the site. It is not on the Vancouver Heritage Registry. The building has been recently vandalized and withdevelopment slated for 2003 and it should be demolished.
CONCLUSION
To secure the site, the Director of Real Estate Services recommends that the building be demolished at an estimated cost of $150,000. The fee should be charged to PEF Demolition account 9300/80090/531240, and recoverable from the budget of future civic projects developed on the site.
