City of Vancouver
South Kerrisdale Traffic Calming
Follow-up
City of Vancouver June 2001
Dear Resident:
As part of the traffic calming plan approved for the South Kerrisdale Neighbourhood a number of different measures were proposed for the area bounded by Southwest Marine Drive, 49th Avenue and West Boulevard. These measures include traffic circles, corner bulges, medians and mid-block bulges.
Following installation of these traffic calming measures data was collected to ensure that the concerns initially forwarded by residents had been addressed. This letter supplies you with information regarding studies completed after the traffic calming measures were in place in your neighbourhood.
The City of Vancouver has recently adopted guidelines for the traffic calming for local residential streets. These include recommended maximum vehicle volumes and acceptable increases on adjacent streets. These criteria allow street segments, which have been brought to our attention, to be prioritized throughout the City. These criteria have been used in the follow up evaluation of the streets in your neighbourhood.
During the follow up evaluations traffic volumes measured before and after the traffic calming plan was implemented show that traffic volumes on local residential streets were reduced by more than 10% on average. Two street segments were identified as potentially needing modifications to the proposed traffic calming measures. These are limited to Yew Street (49th Avenue to SW Marine Drive); and Arbutus Street (59th Avenue to 61st Avenue).
What's Next
The following list outlines the remaining steps relating to the South Kerrisdale traffic calming plan:
- finalize reviews for the street segments of Yew Street (6500 & 6600 block) and Arbutus Street (7500 & 7600 block) ,
- report to Vancouver City Council on any permanent changes for these street segments,
- construction. If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me directly. I can be reached at through the following means:
