REPORT TO COUNCIL

SPECIAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON SENIORS

May 4, 2001

RECOMMENDATION

1. Attendance at the 17th World Congress of Gerontology:

RTS: 2073

At its meeting on October 7, 1997, Vancouver City Council approved an annual allocation of $3,500 in the Operating Budget to be reserved for grant requests for local conference expenses from Council appointed bodies without direct access to funding.

The 17th World Congress of Gerontology will be held at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre: July 1 - 6, 2001. The theme is Global Aging: Working Together in a Changing World. Internationally recognized experts in gerontology will share their knowledge and experience with participants through symposiums and plenary sessions.

Attendance fees for the conference are $375 per entry pass prior to May 31, 2001 and $425 per entry pass thereafter.

The Special Advisory Committee on Seniors believes the benefits gained from participating in sessions will contribute to the overall mandate of the Committee. Members who participate will have the opportunity to exchange ideas, information and network with people from different countries and disciplines which will advance their personal knowledge in the field of gerontology. It is the intention of the Committee to purchase two entry passes prior to May 31, 2001 to take advantage of the early registration discounts. Members will share the passes for attendance at various events.

Therefore, the Special Advisory Committee on Seniors

RECOMMENDS

THAT members of the Special Advisory Committee on Seniors be authorized to attend the 17th World Congress of Gerontology at the Vancouver Convention and Exhibition Centre: July 1 - 6, 2001.

FURTHER THAT the sum of $750 be allocated to attendance fees for theConference.

Signed: "Mary Bosze"
Co-Chair, Special Advisory Committee on Seniors
