The City maintains a list of potential sponsors for non-market housing on City-owned or controlled sites. Two additions to the list were made in 1999.
The applications are reviewed using Council approved criteria and weighting system. The primary factors which are considered include:
- Society Credentials
- Housing Expertise and Management Philosophy
- Projects Operated by Society
- Links with Community or Neighbourhood Organizations
- Housing Needs and Waiting List of Prospective Tenants
- Housing Project Proposed
- Building Site IdentifiedA minimum score of 70 points is required to recommend its inclusion.
The Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation was created in 1987 as a memorial to the sons of Mel & Irene Zajac. Their goal is to develop affordable supportive housing for seniors and those with disabilities. The Foundation's associations include Mr. Bob Hope as Honorary Chairman and Canadian actor Leslie Nielsen. The Foundation has recently completed a 36-unit project named "Zajac Norgate House" in partnership with another society in North Vancouver. This project is geared for seniors and persons with disabilities.
The Mel Jr. & Marty Zajac Foundation exceeded the 70 point minimum for sponsorship eligibility and staff recommend its inclusion on the list.
