Director, Office of Cultural Affairs

SUBJECT:

1998 Cultural Grants: Arts Administration Grant Request

RECOMMENDATION

GENERAL MANGER'S COMMENTS

COUNCIL POLICY

Approval of grant recommendations requires eight affirmative votes.

PURPOSE

This report recommends a grant of $400 to Main Dance Society to assist with arts administration training for its general manager, source of funds to be the Organizational Development component of the Cultural Grants budget.

BACKGROUND

On February 5, 1998, City Council approved a budget of $30,000 for the Organizational Development component of the Cultural Grants budget. Organizational Development funds are intended to assist with arts administration training costs, with audience development initiatives, and with specific organizational issues through the Partners in Organizational Development program (both POD and audience development initiatives will be reported on later this Fall).

DISCUSSION

Main Dance Projects Society has requested a grant of $550 towards the tuition costs of arts administration training for its general manager, who has recently taken on new responsibilities. The training will consist of three workshops in the Fall and Spring, one on volunteer co-ordination at Vancouver Community College, and two at Simon Fraser University covering fundraising, resource development, management and decision-making. Total tuition costs will be $1,000.

Staff believe that the training will benefit the organization and recommend a grant of $400 towards the training, noting that the B.C. Arts Council has indicated that it will provide assistance at about the same level. Approval of this recommendation will leave an unallocated balance of $29,600 in the Organizational Development component of the Cultural grants budget.
